17 And when my brethren saw that I was about to build a ship, they began to murmur against me, saying: Our brother is a fool, for he thinketh that he can build a ship; yea, and he also thinketh that he can cross these great waters.

So it looks like Nephi didn't tell them what he was doing, but that they "saw that I was about to build a ship"!

Why didn't Nephi tell them?

Possibilities 1. Knew it sounded crazy and that they would murmur. 2. Was praying for this right time and way. 3. Was letting God take care of it. 4. Some other great reason of which I have no clue.

I can't wait to go to Nephi's "fireside" or "Sunday school class" someday (hopefully) and hear all of this from his perspective! Can you imagine!?

I bet that would be one FULL class.

Part of me wonders if God told him not to tell his brothers to see if they would be faithful or not. To test them. Or, maybe God didn't want to tell the brothers because He knew that once again Laman and Lemuel would get mad and say we are the older brothers, why did God not come to us and take it out on Nephi.

Or, it could have been Nephi's choice not to tell. And that I would love to know the reasoning behind.
