15 But behold I said unto them that: As the Lord liveth, and as we live, we will not go down unto our father in the wilderness until we have accomplished the thing which the Lord hath commanded us

"As the Lord liveth" is one of my favorite finds in the Book of Mormon (my favorite being in Alma 22:8). I can't imagine any words that would be stronger than those. I'm grateful Mormon chose to include them in this precious record.

I wonder if I will ever use those words? If so, what would be the promise? I offer my promises on a very limited basis, basically saving them for only God and my husband. I would never want to break a promise, so I hesitate to make them except for in the temple and with my eternal companion.

But if I chose to make a promise to someone else, I could see myself easily saying the words, "As the Lord liveth, and as I liveth - there is a God!"

In the book I’m reading it says “these oaths in ancient time were so sacred that those who made them would easily, and readily, forfeit their lives rather than break this oath.“
