23 Therefore, cheer up your hearts, and remember that ye are free to act for yourselves—to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life.

This is an important verse I must always remember.

Lessons:

1. A cheerful heart is an active choice not a passive result of the day or others' choices.

2. I can always choose how I will act and react in any situation.

3. Sometimes my choices will be limited, but there will always be room for choice.

4. Cheering up my heart is something I can do, or, "act for myself". Not quite sure how to do that when I'm in the thick of heartache, but I believe the scriptures are true, so with God's help, I'm sure I'll discover the 'how' as much as I am able to receive it and as much as it's God's will.

5. I'm also learning that sorrow is part of life, and not an unnecessary emotion. It's how I navigate it that is the challenge.

Maybe trying to cheer up someone else's heart is an 'act' I can do to cheer up my own.

Good food for thought.
