16 Nevertheless, this did not put an end to the spreading of priestcraft through the land; for there were many who loved the vain things of the world, and they went forth preaching false doctrines; and this they did for the sake of riches and honor.
Lessons: Loving riches and honor was the cause of priestcraft- (wanting to build up a church for the income.)
Loving the vain things of the world can consume the heart and push out charity and humility and love for God.
But doesn't everyone, or at least most people, love the vain things of the world at least to some degree? I'm sure I do. So what are they? Would they be nice homes, cars, clothes, accessories, etc.?
Well do I have that stuff? Uh, yeah. I did just spend a small fortune on expensive makeup yesterday.
I suppose the danger is not in the having, but in the degree of the loving.
Does the accumulation of nice things take up all the space in my heart?
I think I try to fill my heart with God, His Son and His path. But I also know that the desire for the vain things of the world can be an easy and subtle temptation of which I need to beware.
