4 But it came to pass that they did not; but they took them and bound them with strong cords, and took them before the chief judge of the land.
I'm not sure what happened between seeking to 'put them away privily' and finding some strong cords, tying them up and taking them to the chief judge? (I wonder if Alma, or Amulek, knew the chief judge? (Since Alma was one.)
