9 And he became a great hinderment to the prosperity of the church of God; stealing away the hearts of the people; causing much dissension among the people; giving a chance for the enemy of God to exercise his power over them.

If I understand this, if we succumb to flattery, our hearts will be stolen, and the enemy of God will have a chance to exercise his power over us.

Now I really want to know where flattery is in my life!

Is it "You deserve this!"?

Is it "You're so good at____."?

Is it "You have ____so you are ____."?

Is it "You did this, not God."

(Yikes on that last one.)

I will be prayerful today to recognize 'flattering thoughts' for what they are - temptations and deceptions.
